The rate of Petty Officer in the Royal Navy comes above that of leading rating and below that of Chief Petty Officer.
It is the equivalent of a Sergeant in the Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force.
Our marching Petty Officer is one of two who would provide close escort and protection to the officer carrying the white ensign.
